Beach vacations on the Caribbean, to me, life can’t get any better than that. If you are not from Colombia you may not realize it but Santa Marta is a favorite destination for vacationers from Colombia, so the prices of hotels, food, entertainment reflect what Colombians would pay.

With an average yearly temperature close to the 30 C mark and warm Caribbean waters along its many many miles of shoreline you can fill your days with swimming, work on a suntan, do some beach camping, there is really an endless variety of leisure activities to fill your days.

Depending on the type of vacation you want to have you can find it all here, whether it’s to party or just chill out, not doing too much of anything. The city is modern and probably has everything that you have at home from internet to up to date communications so you won’t feel isolated.

I prefer the Caribbean coast of South America to the Caribbean Islands for the following reasons and I have lived on an island for many years.

1. Most of the Caribbean is relatively flat and the towns and cities are small.
2. You are not captive on an island which adds to your costs if you want to travel anywhere else.
3. You can explore either the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the highest coastal mountain range in the world or a little further inland the Andes Mountain chain.
4. You are not restricted to one small city or town but have the rest of South America to explore if you choose.
5. All you have to do is go to the bus station to get out of town
6. Colombia has many large cities to fill your vacation time if you wish.
7. In a little over a days travel you can be in Panama, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil or Venezuela.

• Exploring the history of the area, Santa Marta was founded in 1525 so the area has many interesting locations.
• There are birding tours, the area has around 628 different varieties of birds, about the same as the United States and Canada combined and that is in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta only, Colombia has over 1800 varieties, more than anyplace else in the world.
• There is much music and dancing and late night parties if you want.
• The spectacular Tayrona Park, the sun, heat and beauty of the area make for perfect days.
• The whole area is full of one of a kinds, the biggest or found nowhere else in the world.
• The list goes on and on.

Santa Marta is truly an enjoyable place with lots to do and see and a place you will want to return to.
