Cumbia, Folk Dance And Music From Colombias Caribbean Coast
Cumbia is both a dance and a musical style that originated along the Caribbean coast of Colombia. This traditional and popular music has spread throughout almost all of Latin America except Brazil. This folk dance was considered many years ago to be lower class and was looked down upon but no longer, now it is very popular. Originally part of a courtship ritual by slaves, it was a folk dance for couples. The music eventually assimilated with settlers and the natives of South American changing the original sound of the music In its original form, the music was played with drums and flutes and over time picked up more instruments notably the accordion and also brass sections. Bring comfortable shoes cause you'll be dancing.
