ELN Or National Liberation Army, One Of Two Guerrilla Organizations In Colombia

The ELN or Ejército de Liberación Nacional (National Liberation Army) began in 1964 as a Marxist guerrilla organization with members from the catholic clergy along with marxists to form a revolutionary movement. This group has ties to areas outside the cities.

Doctrine

  • Represent the rural poor
  • Oppose US influence
  • Oppose the privatization of natural resources
  • Oppose multinational corporations
Membership for the organization may be between 1500 to 5000

Some of the targets have included

  • Electrical towers
  • Oil pipelines
  • Bombing of foreign assets and interests.

The group has occasionally joined up with FARC to carry out some of their operations and have now signed a pact to end their differences as in the past there has been clashes between the two groups not withstanding that both follow a Marxist ideology

Financing their operations

  • Kidnappings
  • Taxes on businesses which may be looked upon as a form of extortion
  • Drug trafficking

There has been an ongoing peace process throughout the 1990's and into the 2000's without great progress.

The United Nations (UN) included both the National Liberation Army and FARC on their list of "most persistent violators of children in conflict" in an annual report on children and armed conflict released May 21, 2010.

Areas of activity

  • Along the border with Venezuela in the north and northeast.
  • In the Andes mountains
  • In the southwest

The group traditionally operates in the northeast along the border areas with Venezuela, located in the Andes mountains, areas of north, northeast, and southwest Colombia and Venezuela border regions.
