Caribbean Hurricane Season Watching From A Distance
Caribbean Hurricane Season begins June 1st and ends November 30th and it can be something to worry about. A hurricane free Caribbean vacation can be easily found though if you book in a no risk area like Santa Marta, Colombia. The area does get tropical storms but not hurricanes. Colombia is part of the Caribbean Basin which includes the following countries Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador. Grenada, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela. The city is located on the mainland of Colombia, on the Caribbean coast, in the old pirate days this would be called the Spanish Main (Spanish Mainland) on the northern coast of South America. Travel Weather Rainy season is from May to November, although it's different than the rainy season of say Vancouver Canada, rain in Vancouver means that it may rain all day every day for a month, like a heavy drizzle, they say people don't tan in Vancouver, they rust. Rainy season in Santa Marta means a tropical storm that rains cats and dogs for an hour or so then that's it for two or three days, then it may rain again for a few hours. Santa Marta offers high adventure but not disaster adventure. The Facts Yearly rainfall - Santa Marta 12.5 inches
- Dominica 50 on the coast 300 inches in the interior
- Vancouver, Canada 44 inches
Yearly hours of Sunshine - Santa Marta 2900
- Dominica 2700
- Vancouver 1928
At this location you have all the weather advantages of the Caribbean minus the hurricanes. The last thing you want to do on a vacation is hide in a basement or spend two weeks living in a disaster area shelter. It does happen and that's why there are great discounts on Caribbean vacations. Although Santa Marta has a dry climate there is normally no water shortage as the water supply flows from the huge mountain range of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta that protects the coast, from sea level to close to 19,000 feet in 30 miles.

Santa Marta has in reality two seasons the Wet season and the Dry season but the weather is so good that I can't tell them apart. The country that I came from has 4 very distant seasons. So don't stress about Hurricane Season.
