Minca is small village located to the south east of Santa Marta at the lower levels of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the world highest coastal mountain range. The town is located at an elevation of about 2100 feet (650 meters) so the air is not too thin for those with breathing problems.

Don’t forget to bring your camera and binoculars with you as there are plenty of opportunities for sightseeing and photos. The road to the village and further up the mountain range are among the best birding areas you will find anywhere, if you keep going up the road you will eventually get to the Eldorado Nature Reserve where you may begin to see endemic birds, animals, amphibians and reptiles.

This location a great day trip from Santa Marta, the temperatures drop as you ascend the mountain roads and you are enveloped in the cool shade of the trees along the road.

Even though it’s warm it’s a good idea to bring a small umbrella with you because if you are caught in the open during one of the frequent afternoon downpours you will get soaked because it comes down in buckets.
