Palm Trees
Adding Beauty to the Caribbean

Palm trees are both special and beautiful, it feels like they are from another world with a higher order of elegance. Is there any other tree that you would rather see lining the Caribbean beaches than a coconut palm, how about a row of maples, maybe some birch trees. The palm is one of the reasons that I am so attracted to living in the Caribbean, it's the palm lined beaches that are so welcoming.

Going for a walk throughout Santa Marta or El Rodadero you will find that some places look like the jungle is competing with the city for space and winning, palms and tropical shrubs growing everywhere, you are living amongst nature and have not defeated it here.

The Coconut Palm which grows around Santa Marta has many uses, considered one of the top trees for it's usability.

  • The coconut for eating
  • The woven husks of the coconut for fiber
  • Coconut oil
  • Leaves for thatching
  • Beauty
  • Shade
  • Hundreds of other uses

When you are in Santa Marta don't miss the chance to take at least a bus excursion to Tayrona Park (Tairona Park) for the day, you will see some very beautiful tree lined beaches, if you plan ahead a little you could do some beach camping at some very memorable locations.

These trees holds a special place in Colombia and as such have been designated as the national tree.

  1. Among the greatest variety of palms of any country in the world.
  2. The tallest palms in the world being the Cera (Wax) Palm which grows in the Andes Mountains.
